Wednesday started early. I
was up at 3 AM to update the Summit Point and Mason Dixon results. Jack Christine
came by at 4:45 AM and we hit the road in SP 218. I bet the neighbors were
happy.
We met Mark Ray and
Larry Pew
in the Titanium Coupe No. 33 and Robert Dickson and his daughter Lisa in SP
1978 for breakfast. While we were refueling a police office pulled in. He
got out of the squad car all grins. A small crowd gathered. Hoods went up.
Questions were asked and answered. |

The sun finally found its
way through the morning clouds. Manly conversations about it not being that
cold kept the side curtains in the trunk. But it was that cold. I can only
imagine living in a car for a week at these temperatures.
We arrived at the South
Course paddock at VIR around 8 o’clock. The competitors began arriving from
their overnight journey from the drags in Maryland. Other MK III’s arrived.

Around 9, the first group was on
the track. One familiarization lap and three timed laps and that was it.
Dennis ran in the second group.

As they finished the South
Course, the competitors left for the North Course which was running at the
same time. No 4 Superformance Coupe and
No 7 CAV GT40 replica. Shades of history.

The first two events were
finished by lunch. We all took a break and dined at the North Paddock.
Dennis the builder/driver is Dennis the
husband/father at lunch at the far right end of the table with wife Alison
and sons Emory and Graeme. |

At lunch one of the competitors
told me that there had been a crowd of Cobras at every event. He thought the
way we supported our team was really great. |

After lunch, the third time
trial was held on the full course – North and South combined. We headed back
to the South course paddock to observe. Through the good graces of the track
officials we got a premier spectator’s position in the flagman’s tower. From
our position, we could pick up the competitors at Fish Hook and follow them
up through the Climbing Esses and South Bend, around Oak Tree and down the
Back Straight all the way to the top of the hill at The Bitch.
We could hear Dennis hit
fifth going up the hill at 170 mph and pulling around 180 mph in fifth
before braking for Roller Coaster. The Back Straight is about 3850 ft long.

VIR was a good day with three top 10
finishes, good enough to move Dennis and Rick up to 10th overall
and 6th in class. A good day’s work. |

The day was not over though. The
team stopped at the Olthoff’s shop to replace the spare half shafts
installed after the first event with new ones provided by the folks at
Dynamic. |

few minor repairs, some tuning, and it was off the Roebling Road.
